World turning event

Someone visiting tonight said "If we hadn't won the war you'd all be speaking German" So can I ask is their a world turning event you think changed the course of the World?

The Cold war?
Britain declaring war WWI and WWII?
The dropping of the Atom Bomb?
9/11?
Kennedy or King's death?
Rosa Parka refusing to give up her bus seat?

What do you consider to be aworld changing event and
why?

Re: World turning event

It would have to be the Bomb; that did change the course of world events IMHO. Rosa Parks was important for race relations here; not so much for the world. And what about the development of the polio vaccine? That had a worldwide effect. Also the AIDS epidemic. And the Internet...we wouldn't be chatting here without it.....buying things on eBay and Amazon, IM'ing, etc, etc.

Re: World turning event

Only a little question then .....
Erm .... electricity and associated advances in broadcasting etc?
Or the internal combustion engine/need for oil and all that both entail
The wheel?
Iron?
Fire?

A lot depends on whether you want to put a time frame on it?

I think historians/archaeologists say that the 'discovery' and improvement of wheat and other grain crops, which meant that humankind could stop being hunter/gatherers and instead become settled farmers is the most significant change in man's history.

Re: World turning event

Very valid point, DM; you're right, of course. Was thinking of the recent time frame, that is our and our paarents lifetimes. Oh, and add the invention of writing to the list!
