Grrrrr. In a bit of a mood today :(

After the kitchen was done, I had about £500 left. I decided to get the house painted (back and front). The guy down the road that seems to know EVERYBODY and does a lot of work around here said he would do the painting for £450 plus £70 for paint.

Anyway, he did the back and started on the front and then mentioned the paint was gonna be £150. I didnt have the extra money so queried the extra £80 for paint. He said he never said £70 for paint to start with (which he did). I told him to forget finishing the front and to leave it alone. He said he couldnt do that, as it looks bad on him so he has done the front too (except the inner porch by the front door which now looks stupid).

I have given him the money he originally asked for but he has now made me feel really bad. He is the sort of person that will tell the whole street I messed him about (when I didnt) and he keeps on inviting himself into my house - yesterday to look at the kitchen, and today when painting the OUTSIDE of my house.

Wish I hadnt bothered to ask him to do it now :(

Do you think £150 is an extortionate amount of paint? I have a victorian mid terrace so not a huge house.

I just dont know the cost of paint Moli to be honest, but did seem a lot. House looks better now! Hated that grey - its now a creamy yellow colour so looking nice and cheerful!!:) (Unlike me!!:( )

Bog-standard exterior dulux is not that expensive. Just look at the prices on the DIY shelves and then 1/2 it coz painters will get it trade.

Sounds like a bit of a cowboy to me . . .

Donna, I think £150 for paint is a lot. Can he not let you have the receipts or at least copies of them??

We have just painted the front of our bungalow and it was less than £15 for the paint so x that by the extra you would need to cover the front and back of yours that would be 10 times as much paint???

Here is how much paint ours used

I know it was Sandtex exterior paint, but assume its not much different in cost to Dulux. I think he was trying to have one over on me. At the end of the day, I told him I didnt have any more money so he didnt get any more. It was a cash job too so I have done him a big favour tax wise.

Hard to work out the size as the front is simple enough, but the back has a kitchen addition to the original house, plus a bathroom addition and loo addition as it is Victorian. Lots of bits and pieces all over the place!!

just add a couple more litres of paint onto the workings, I reckon the paint was easily less than £100, I am sure the sandtex is less than £25 for 10L and I wouldn't need any more than 20 litres.

Just wish I never let him talk me into doing the job now. The kitchen workman was great and he would of done the painting too.

I feel uneasy around this guy and he keeps on inviting himself into my house. He knows everybody's business. And he is so two faced. He was slagging my kitchen workman but was friendly to his face.

Oh well, am sure I will forget about all this in time.

Well at least it does look good, nothing worse than paying a lot and having a terrible job done. Next time he tries and invite himself in, just tell him that you have got company.

I think you have been slightly "overcharged" on the price of the paint. honestly. But just ignore the bloke he sounds like he will soon move onto someone else. Just don't get involved in his "chat" and shut the door when he tries to come in.;)
