Cat flaps

Cassie is always safely locked indoors by 7.00pm during the winter but I thought I would warn members that cat flaps can freeze solid during the frosty weather. Many a time I have gone to unlock Cassie's flap to let her out in the morning and it has been frozen solid around the edges.

Please make sure your cats are safely indoors before you go to bed, I would hate to think of someone's poor cat scratching desperately at at a frozen catflap trying to get back into the warmth.

Re: Cat flaps

Good point Mags.

Alternatively you could always leave a wee box of matches at the back door for kitty to keep warm, only kidding.

Re: Cat flaps

Thsts something i would never think of. Not that we have a cat flap but have thought one

Kittens have a utility room, conservatory, stairs up to houseplant room at back of the house & they really do think they are outside (somewhere different where they can do their own thing).

We know there may come a time when it wont be enough & they will want out into the big open world but for now they are safe and be independent to a certain extent. Just needs bit of juggling when dogs need out into the garden

Re: Cat flaps

We have a hole (no cat flap door) with a bit of carpet fixed over it with a slit which they push through.

The snow is much deeper outside than the level of the cat flap so because it's a door we don't use - I've cleared it and stood the patio table against the door so the snow wont fall there.

Re: Cat flaps

I dont have that problem. I removed the magnetic strip from ours because every time my cat went out, it snapped back quite noisily which frightened her. So it now blows a gale through it, but the cats are happy! Oliver goes through it at 100 mph, so just as well its loose as I think if it wasnt, he would have a pretty sore head!!
