Modern times

What couldn't you now live without that say your parents wouldn't have considered possible?

I ask because the other day tok my Mom and Dad out for a curry and my Dad said "your Nan would think this odd rice and chicken on the same plate, rice was a pudding?"

Also washing machines, I remember helping my Mom with the washing and using a mangle to dry it?

My automatic washing machine!

I can remember my mum's mangle too...and the boiler! She later progressed to a twin tub but hardly used it as she preferred to use her faithful old boiler

My electric kettle also, plus the toaster oven, cell phone & computer. My mom had what was called set tubs in the basement...two ironstone tubs side by side, one for washing & the other for rinsing, plus she used a wash board! Anyone remember them? And we had a coal furnace...couldn't live now without central heating!!

Re: Modern times

Washing machine comes out pretty high, doesn't it? I remember my mum's first single tub washer, with the electric wringer/mangle on top. You still had to do all the tongs/lifting stuff, fill it with a hose, empty it with a hose etc etc. I too had a twin tub, and did nappies in it for a little while when i had Katie. Progressed to a top-loading automatic after that and never went to disposable nappies - the first ones were horrid things that just turned to nasty wet mush.

What about central heating? We're all so used to that now. Bit different from the one fire in the living room and ice on the inside of the bedroom windows.

TV I could live without. PC - don't think so. I really hope the new, electronic world will help us all as we age ..... imagine, we could all be sitting here when we're 90, ordering the Whiskas online for home delivery, and chatting about our cats still!
