Nativity Play Costume - ideas please!

OK, I've just had a note from school to say that Dominik is playing an inn-keeper in this years nativity play; 'Nursery Rhyme Nativity'.

Question is, what on earth does an inn-keeper in biblical times wear Parents are being 'encouraged' to assist with their children's costumes but I have not a clue as to what to dress him in Once I have the costume sussed I can enrol my retired-seamstress Mum into making the darned thing (I can't even sew a name tag without serious injury )!!!

Help anyone???

lol Yola. Its a nightmare trying to sort these things isnt it!

For an inn keeper I would just go for a simple ankle length shift in either a dark fabric or a striped one. Use a scrap length for a belt. And for his head the old 'tea towel' style of head dress with a length of braid to hold it on. Good luck!

Tea towels on heads springs to mind!! Long time since I've had to do anything like this, with mine being so much older now. Looking forward to seeing Domi in his Innkeeper's outfit

There are a load of patterns in the Pattern Catalogues for kids nativity costumes - one of those should do nicely. If you have a material or dressmaking shop nearby you should be able to get them there or I'm sure there are online places.

I've just re-read Yola's first post here ............. what's the meaning of "Nursery Rhyme" Nativity? Does that mean that Little Boy Blue (for example) could be the innkeeper .... or Dick Whittington or his cat for that matter ...........

Re: Nativity Play Costume - ideas please!

Angie, it was two years ago m'dear, I have trouble remembering things from last week LOL!!

I really have no idea now why it was called a Nursery Rhyme Nativity, despite racking my brain

This year his class are doing an 'in the stable' series of readings and he's playing a colt! Remember the ponytail I mentioned in EmmaG's hairpiece thread; well it's going to be tied to Dominik's waistband as a REAL ponytail

I'll take pictures

Sorry - I didn't even look at the date of your post ..... it's that Tink! Why she resurrected your thread ..... well, we'll have to ask her!

Look forward to seeing photos of "in the stable"! What's Domi going to be reading?

Re: Nativity Play Costume - ideas please!

He's reading the 'Colt's Story' essentially it's all about animals in a stable each of which has something to talk about. Domi's Colt is a whingey thing, complaining about the chattering of the chickens, the hot air of the cows and the icicles of his nose!

He's really got the expressive reading off to a tee beautifully (I've been teaching him eye-rolling attitude too ); I may video it as my new blackberry will take vids so we can get the full effect of his 'drama'!!
