It could be a coincidence that cats have gone missing, cats do unfortunately have a bad road sense and also with one of them being a kitten its possible he/she has simply been taken in by someone thinking he/she's a stray I also think if they go a little to far off their "noraml" routethey can get lost espeically with the bad weather rain etc washing away a possible landmark. I know its no help and I would be beside myself too.
