Re: Blackster has a malformed spine.

Hi guys, my father took her as I am waiting in incase of any news on Kiara.

It's been confirmed she has a form of spina bifida, which will obviously be with her for life. She has a hole in her spine which is so rare even the spinal vet had never seen it before. This means her spinal cord is very vunerable at the hole as there is nothing protecting it, and if damaged could paralyse her from the waist down.

So we have to be careful of her having fights, falls, e.t.c. She is also more at risk from contracting meningitis.

So all in all nothing can be done for her but at least we know what is it and what to look out for. Hopefully she will learn to adapt and have a great life. She will never be allowed outside only on a harness and lead, and she is just generally more prone to certain illness and of course, we have to be extra careful of her back where the hole in her spine is (it's about the size of my thumbnail).

Aww...at least it has been confirmed now Random so you know exactly how to care for her. By keeping her indoors you have eliminated the greatest danger from her and with your love and care she can still enjoy a good quality of life.....

Re: Blackster has a malformed spine.

Thanx everyone, just one of those freak things that happen, it couldn't be helped. You never think it will be one of yours. I have some comfort in knowing that she has never known 'normal', so she isn't bothered at all in herself. She is already doing much better on her back legs so here's to a positive future for her.

She's been given treatment for her runny tum, we're just hoping that it isn't related to her spine. Time will tell.

At least you know what you're dealing with now, Kel, and like you say she has never known any different and I'm sure she'll be happy and adapt well.

I'm so pleased that your father is keeping her.

Hmmmmmmm - what to name her?!?!?!?!?!?

Re: Blackster has a malformed spine.

Thanx guys. It's just been a really bad week for us this week, but she's a happy little girl so I guess I shouldn't worry so much about her. Easier said than done though. We'll have to get some name suggestions to my dad and see what he thinks.
