Re: Quiz - Wednesday 8th July

Maybe I'm confusing that with woad (early Britons painted blue), a source of dye?

Re: Quiz - Wednesday 8th July

Dyers were restricted to outside the town walls as many processes involved tramping in stale urine

Re: Quiz - Wednesday 8th July

It was a source of a cheap and common pale yellow dye - also called dyer's rocket, dyer's mignonette and dyer's broom.

Re: Quiz - Wednesday 8th July

Evidently early Britons used to go to war naked, covered in woad and with their hair limed to stand on end. The enemy either turned and ran or collapsed with laughter (unless you were a Roman of course!)
