jungle has an abscess!

got my mums cat up on friday as shes away to her caravan, and i did notice when i pet her on friday she had a small bump which felt like a scab to me. this is normal for her as she goes out, she also has a scab on her ear.

well she came in after her days gallavant and i went to pick her up for a cuddle just there, and i immediately noticed the smell and a small wet patch on her head. cleaned it up with salt water, small bit of puss came away then mostly blood so im thinking it burst earlier. tried to gently give the surrounding area a squeeze for any more but think thats it. will she need anti-biotics?? i know with my rats that aslong as ive gotten all the puss out they normally heal up fine but im not sure with cats. should she need a vets trip?

As its burst and you are cleaning it, would not think she would need Ab's, keep an eye on it...

Re: jungle has an abscess!

thanks moli, will need to make sure shes around in the morning for another clean and check! its quite a small area, i read this and thought it sounded right:

When to visit the vet

If you know that your cat has been bitten or has a claw wound it is best to take it to the vet before an abscess develops. Penetrating bite wounds are almost always infected.

If your cat is off it's food or in pain.

If the abscess is extensive.

If the abscess does not rupture or begin to resolve within 48 hours.

If the abscess ruptures but is not clearing up within 48 hours or is re-forming.

Yes, keep cleaning with salt water (or Hibiscrub if you have it) and keep an eye on it - poor little cat - wonder how she got that?

Are you able to trim a bit of hair around it? Daily bathing will help prevent it healing over and filling up again. Keep a close eye on it but hopefully it'll be fine.

Re: jungle has an abscess!

Hopefully, she's on the mend. When Pip had an infection from a tick bite last year, the vet did say that it was important that the wound didn't heal too quickly to make sure that the infection had cleared. Our little furry friends so like to keep us on our toes!
