Douglas has gone!

We had a big Douglas Fir cut down last Saturday - it was all one-sided and we were worried that it might come down on our house during a northerly gale, so the tree surgeons came and cut it down for us.

It was a nasty grey overcast day here last Saturday with occasional mizzly rain and cold.

A much better day today, however. Its cold but lovely blue sky and sunshine. It's amazing how much lighter it is inside our bungalow now Douglas has gone.

Douglas's Stump!

That's a huge tree to have in your garden Angie no wonder you're pleased it's gone! A lot more sunlight for you I imagine

Re: Douglas has gone!

It's a shame, but, like everything, trees have a lifespan and poor Douglas appeared to be near the end of his.
Enjoy the light - and maybe plant a couple of replacements in a more appropriate place?

Re: Douglas has gone!

I asked the tree surgeon (who has done tree work for us over the years) what he would plant in it's place and he suggested a liquidamber sweet gum. I think that would look wonderful and that may very well be what goes in that gap!

Re: Douglas has gone!

I do find the sight of trees being removed very sad. But having done it myself on a couple of occasions I fully understand the safety/light angle.

Are you going to get the stump removed? Difficult to plant anything else there at the moment as I imagine the roots are quite invasive . . .

Re: Douglas has gone!

Sad to see it go, but I know you'll enjoy the extra sunshine. I had a juniper in my front yard felled in a bad storm, but luckily it fell across the street rather than on my house, so the City had to send a crew to clear it away; I only needed a tree surgeon to remove the part that was left on my property. If the sweet gum is the tree I'm thinking of it has stunning Autumn foliage.

Yes, that's the one Eileen.

I was sad to see the fir tree go, but I trust our tree surgeon and he had said if it was in his garden, he would have removed it. Also the evil s*******s had an old dray in the tree! So they are now homeless .........
