New kitten rescued from ferral population

My daughter attended camp this past weekend at a camp ground populated with a ferral cat population. The caretakers of the camp grounds feed these cats scraps, and they encouraged the campers to capture and rehome the kitten population. Needless to say, my daughter arrived home from camp with an adorable calico that is between 4 and 6 weeks of age. Roxy, the kitten, pretty much ate every four hours as if every meal was her last for the first two days. Now on her third day she will eat, but leaves some food in her dish. She is an active and playful kitten, but she does not know how to groom herself. I have been washing her with a warm washcloth from head to toe once a day but she is not happy about it and meows in protest and fights when I clean her. What is the best way to clean a fiesty kitten?

Gosh, I bet that came as a bit of a surprise! I had 2 kittens but they were already socialised and washing/litter traying. I would continue doing what you're doing and hopefully Roxy will get the message. Is she litter trained?

Make sure you spay her as soon as she's old enough though, otherwise the kitten problem will end up perpetuating itself.

I agree with what Yola has said just continue with what you are doing and hopefully she will get the message and start cleaning herself, and get her spayed as soon as she is old enough.

Roxy is doing very well. She had some seziures the first week we had her, but after worming her and with good nutrition she has tripled her size and has been seizure free for the past 3 weeks. The vet isn't sure what might have been the cause of the seizures as Roxy checked out okay health wise. At this point we're just keeping an eye on the situation. She's settled into her new home, loves our other cat even though he pretty much ignores her. She follows him everywhere. She's still a bit wary of the dogs who are cat friendly but are very big and must seem like huge creatures to her. And of course she had hours of fun climbing the xmas tree and whacking off ornaments

That's about the age my Charlotte was when I trapped her in a squirrel trap. She was docile and sweet, but very distant for the first year or so (we called her "the alleged cat" because she mostly vanished all day). Like Roxy, her grooming wasn't great for a very long time, and she had a little heart murmer that went away as she aged.

She's now eight and a lovely fat glossy girl. Not the most affectionate cat we've ever had, but still sweet and gentle.

Patience is rewarded with ferals!
