New hens.

We got some ex-free range commercial hens from a local rescue. I was convinced they were battery hens, but no, battery hens are worse than this.

What is amazing is that they are really tame and are starting to feather up already and we've only had them for a month.

No eggs yet, but I'm actually quite glad as I would prefer they use their energy to fillout and feather up.

Poor loves - at least it doesn't look as if they were de-beaked. They look like the little flock I had - Iso-browns are they?

Re: New hens.

They will be something of that type, there seem to be so many hi-breds that look similar. I was glad to see they weren't debeaked and we haven't lost any. It was very interesting when we collect them- some were outside and some were in. The ones outside were quite well feather and the ones inside were nearly bald.

Don't they look plumptious now? Shame there are no eggs - but at least they should be keeping the slug population down for you!
