Is it the Wassail Song Eileen? Those lyrics are in the last verse.....

The Wassail Song : Lyrics

Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green,
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

We are not daily beggers
That beg from door to door,
But we are neighbors' children
Whom you have seen before
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Good master and good mistress,
As you sit beside the fire,
Pray think of us poor children
Who wander in the mire.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year

We have a little purse
Made of ratching leather skin;
We want some of your small change
To line it well within.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Bring us out a table
And spread it with a cloth;
Bring us out a cheese,
And of your Christmas loaf.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

God bless the master of this house,
Likewise the mistress too;
And all the little children
That round the table go.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

God bless you, merry gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay;
Remember Christ our Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day
To save poor souls from Satan's power,
That long have gone astray ―
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy,
Joy and joy,
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy.

The shepherds brought these tidings
And rejoiced much in mind;
They left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind.
Straightway they went to Bethlehem
The Son of God to find ―
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy,
Joy and joy,
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy.

Straightway they went to Bethlehem,
Where our sweet Saviour lay;
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed with hay;
The Blessed Virgin Mary
Kneeling to the Lord did pray ―
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy,
Joy and joy,
Which brings tidings of comfort and joy.

God bless the Master of this house
And Mis-ter-ess also;
God bless the little children
That round the table go;
God bless their friends and kindred,
That come from far and near;
May the Lord send a happy New Year,
Happy New Year,

May the Lord send a happy New Year.

This is confusing: some of the lyrics are the ones in Kazz' carol, and most of Mags is right also, but the one I'm thinking of has some lines about a soul cake, a sole a sole a soul cake...maybe an amalgam of parts of both, or a variation heard in the States.??? If I hear it on the radio will try to catch the title: I know the 60's folk singers, Peter, Paul and Mary did it, but it's not on my CD of them...just checked!

Re: Christmas Spirit, Now after me - 1,2,3...

Well of course!!!!!!!!! not obscure really the 1893 Cheshire Souling Song.

The Cheshire Souling Song

Chorus:
A soul! a soul! a soul-cake!
Please good Missus, a soul-cake!
An apple, a pear, a plum or a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul,
Three for Him who made us all.

God bless the master of this house,
The misteress also,
And all the little children
That round the table grow.
Likewise young men and maidens,
Your cattle and your store;
And all that dwell within your gates,
We wish you ten times more
A soul, etc.

Down into the cellar,
And see what you can find,
If your barrels are not empty,
We hope you will prove kind.
(We hope you will prove kind,
With your apples and strong beer,
And we'll come no more a-souling
Till this time next year.)
A soul, etc.

The lanes are very dirty,
My shoes are very thin,
I've got a little pocket
To put a penny in.
If you haven't got a penny
A ha'penny will do;
If you haven't got a ha'penny,
It's God bless you!
A soul, etc
