Q's about tinned sardines and mackerel

Hi all,

Lottie (13 weeks old) is currently on a diet of:

Morning - half pouch of Whiskas mixed with Natures Menu sprinkled with dry
Day - some Purina One to nibble on
Night - half pouch of Whiskas mixed with Natures Menu sprinkled with dry

He also gets some cooked chicken from time to time and he loves it!

I'm gradually changing his food to better quality stuff, so hopefully he will be on Natures Menu / HiLife and Applaws.

I recently bought sardines in brine, sardines in olive oil and mackerel in sunflower oil.

Are these O.K for Lottie to eat? Also are there better ones I could be buying?

Thanks for any suggestions / advice!

Hi there! Your little Lottie sounds to be getting a good varied diet. I would not recommend feeding fish in brine, but the ones in oil should be OK as a treat.

You could also try raw minced beef - but this must be frozen first and defrosted as that kills a bacteria that may be present. My dear old Merlin loved the odd treat of hand-fed mince!

If you see these in spring water rather than brine then use those. Brine is too high in salt. Some cats also really go for the pilchards in tomatoe sauce as an ocasional treat.

Thanks for that Elaine as I get pilchards in tom sauce as a treat for the dogs periodically. I will offer the kittens share next time, only teeny bit for Tim as his digestion can be icky at times.

Most cats enjoy sardines in oil (except Ms Picky!) Not as a regular diet, but a treat; have never tried the tinned mackerel. Lottie's diet sounds OK to me.

Re: Q's about tinned sardines and mackerel

You can get tuna in water but I've never seen pilchards or mackerel in water. And I suspect that the pilchards in tom sauce contain as much salt (& probably lots of sugar) as the ones in brine!

But I would definitely recommend trying some raw minced meat. My cats love turkey mince & sometimes will eat some of the dogs' beef mince. And steamed/microwaved coley fish goes down a treat with my two cats too, plus it's low fat & easily digested. And what about the occasional egg, cooked or raw, also a good source of protein.

Let us know if your two fluffs like them will you Elaine???

(My two little sillies don't seem to care for any sort of fish - do you think they know they're cats??)
