That's quite a tricky one I think Kazz. Obviously not cocoa shell, as that can be lethal for dogs and I am not sure whether the tree chippings have been chemically treated. You might be able to find a wood chippings one that hasn't. Gravel and shingle are fairly animal friendly I guess.

I don't use mulch so really don't have any ideas. My neighbor next door uses shredded tree bark, very dark, ands he has a JR .......

I use ornamental bark Kazz, mostly around the plant/shrubs I want to protect during the winter. I'm not sure how dogs react with it but Cassie doesn't bother with it at all..

Re: Animal friendly garden mulch?

I use combination of tree bark, have cats and dogs and have had no probs (have a bag in shed, ran out and checked - doesn't mention not pet friendly).
or

keep lawn cuttings and use them as mulch around the shrubs at the back of the border or where they can't be seen.

Also, this year have tried some of that weed suppressor matting. Obviously can't use that where the plants spread or divide or are perenial.

Gravel is fine but will work its way into the earth and make it quite stoney.
