Jet & Her First Prey

On Christmas Eve morning I went into back garden and Jet was there with what I thought was something stuck to her mouth. On further inspection it was a mouse in her mouth. I panicked and made her drop it, the mouse went running and I took Jet into the house.

Later that evening I let her out and again saw she had caught the mouse. Again I made her drop it, the mouse ran towards me and I ran into the house. My neighbour said just let her have it as its in their nature to hunt, He said its cruel but what else can you do. I went into the house and left her too it.

Next day I opened door to let her out and the mouse had been left on the doorstep.

Still feel guilty about it, I know the mouse didnt wear white gloves and work at Disneyland but still the same. Maybe I should have made her leave it alone but she cannot be watched all the time.

It's unattractive to us but it really is just nature Andrew. You might have been kinder just letting Jet do what comes naturally in the first instance, rather than drag it out?.

Yeah, I suppose your right.

As it was her first catch/kill I just didnt know what to do.

I will leave her alone in future.

I have seen the way cats play with their prey before that final act and find that hard to watch.

I'm afraid that it is just one of those things cat owners have to expect and understand if they allow their cats outdoors. It is a natural cat instinct to hunt...

Rosie regularly brings me home mice - it is her way of contributing. If she brings them in alive I usually manage to throw a towel over them and repatriate them to a spot in the garden (when she is not looking).

She's just doing what Nature designed her to do...its instinctive. And cats do usually leave their prey for their people...cat I grew up witth was a great hunter and some mornings my Mom would find as many as five mice lined up on the steps!

With my cats I usually try and rescue any mice etc that are obviously still alive. I will bring my cats in and keep them in, however if they have killed it I will just let them eat/play with them, otherwise two minutes later they will have another.

So glad I only have to contend with Teddie and her toy mouse, lol!

Although Princess did bring me one before she went to Smudgleys.

I don't mind them catching mice but when they bring them into the house alive I freak out!

I don't like it when they bring birds home.
