You know computers its worth a try . my clients laugh when i tell them to restart the machine.

I have another few things you can try, once you are rebooted.

this is weird... I shut it down & when I logged back in - I went into e-mails without going on-line... the numbers are there, then I logged into the on-line bit (have to go through a tunnel to access the works on-line stuff if you are working from a site other than your permanent one) well when I log in there, the numbers are not there.

You using outlook web access or VPN tunnel and outlook.
Goto help then about to find version details.

OK I don't have that version so cant test here.
I would contact the IT department and explain what's going on.
Tell them ya want outlook 2003
