Re: Cancer and scared....

Glad to know you have a pretty solid diagnosis, and know where to go from here for Reggie. "Aggressive" means very likely to spread (metastasize). so excellent that it hasn't yet spread to the nodes, etc. Do let us know what's happening, you know you'll get support here, we do care. xxx

Glad you have got things moving for Reggie, when will the results of the biopsy be back?
Is Reggie home or does he have to stay at the vets ?

Re: Cancer and scared....

Hello flowery, firstly sorry for the muddled reply; I'm on holiday and have consumed some wine . . . my cat is currently just post 2 x surgeries for a tumour on her paw - we're worried as it seems to be returning. Can I ask what type of tumour it is your vet has diagnosed? Our Fifi has a 'nerve sheath tumour' which is quite rare and like Reggie's is unlikely to spread beyond the immediate area so I can understand your relief.

I would say the tests your vet is carrying out are good ones; we opted for excision . . . twice. The next step (if this hasn't worked) will be amputation. However, if Reggie's tumour is the size of an orange, I would be concerned that any kind of surgery would be unlikely to remove the affected area completely so chemo + amputation might be your only option. We have been quoted in the region of 1.6 - 2.5K in terms of cost for chemo alone . . .

Once you have the full facts - hard as it may be, you really need to consider all, and I mean ALL options available to you.

We're here if you need to talk this through.

Re: Cancer and scared....

Hi all

Thanks for everyones concern, it really is appreciated and does help when you're so worried and upset. As yet, we don't know what the cancer is although we will find out Mon/Tues (hopefully) when the tests come back.

He's at home with us and is really comfortable, eating,, drinking and acting normal really He's just asleep in the conservatory with his plant pot on his head as he's got c.12 stitches from where they've took biopsies.

I will keep you all informed ... hope you all have a great weekend xx (and thanks from Reggie x)

It sounds as though he's being a brave boy, fingers crossed for when his results come back next week.

Re: Cancer and scared....

Hi everyone
Just thought Id let you know that the test results are back and I have to be honest, things aren't looking good. Reggie has hemangiosarcoma which is an extremely aggressive form of cancer which could already have gone to other organs in his body (the vet said that the Xrays cannot show for sure where it may have spread to). She said it was not good news at all.

She is referring him to a cancer specialist today so he can go for further tests to see what can be done but amuputation isn't possible because of where it is and she said that we have to be made aware that there may be nothing that can be done, although we are going to try EVERYTHING possible for him (just so long as he's not in pain).

He's eating normal which is a good sign although he is slightly quieter than normal but we just need to look out for him going off his food and make the vets aware of any changes in the interim. Hopefully we should have an appointment in the next few days to see the specialist.

Please say a little prayer for Reggie x
(I just can't stop crying at the minute, I'm so worried for him and really don't want him not to be around anymore)

I am very sorry to hear that the news isn't good for Reggie, Flowery. I too hope that something wonderful can be done. Fingers crossed that the specialist can come up with something. At the least, he does not seem to be in pain and you will know as soon as there is any change in him. Make the most of this time with him and try to be brave for him. ((((HUGS))))

Re: Cancer and scared....

Flowery, I am new to Catsey [trying to find out info on tumors and possible outcome of amputation for a 14-yr old cat] and I'm so sorry to hear about Reggie and the prognosis.

I'm sure that whatever you decided, you did the best you could for Reggie. I've always had the philosophy that no matter how much it hurts me to say goodbye to my precious cats, if it will relieve them of their misery and pain then it's the best thing to do for them. I certainly would never want to keep any one of my cats alive just for selfish reasons without taking their feelings and the pain they're enduring into consideration.

My heart goes out to you ...
