Samphire

The fish man at the market had samphire today, so we shall be having line-caught cod, baked in the oven with lemon and olive oil, with boiled samphire.
Here's a link for those of you who don't know of it http://uktv.co.uk/food/ingredient/aid/509472
It's a real treat - and I don't think I can describe it. Sort of salty (as it grows beside the sea), crunchy, fleshy - just something really different

Re: Samphire

Very interesting! I'd heard of it but thought it was a seaweed...sounds as if it would be very tasty, espcially with the fresh-caught fish (sigh.... can't get that here!) ..enjoy!!

Re: Samphire

I have never heard of it before- can you have it without the fish? or is it normally only eaten with fish?

Re: Samphire

Of course you can have it as you wish. Just that I get it from the fish man so think fish + samphire. It is quite a fragile, perishable thing and is often pickled because it doesn't keep. You could easily have it with cheese then - like pickled cabbage etc.l

Re: Samphire

I'd never heard of it either! I must see if the fishman at our local market sells it.

Re: Samphire

I can't stand the smell of the fishmonger if I ever see it I'll think about trying it - it sounds really nice - especially pickled with some cheese
