Feline Infectious Peritonitis

I own a beautiful pedigree cat called Lichen. We love each other with a passion.

She has done loads of winning at shows and is in her 3rd call. I was just about to mate her to a carefully chosen husband when her breeder informs me that 2 of her littermates have lost their lives to FIP.

Has anyone any experience of this ? What is the prognosis for her ? She has just had the corona virus test and we are awaiting the results.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that she is not vulnerable to this insidious disease,

My honest advice is if you are not sure about her health, it's best to get her spayed and not breed from her.

AS I understand it the majority of housecats, which essentially means pedigree cats, have this virus but it only mutates to FIP in a small number of cats.

Lichen currently is fit and well and is from a very rare breed. It would be to the detriment of the breed if she was removed from the breeding programme without me making efforts to ascertain her health status so she will not be spayed without further evidence.

I want to do my best for her and for her breed so I will be making an informed decision rather than a rash one.

Other than waiting to see what the coronavirus test results are, I'd hold off breeding for the moment.
Should she prove possitive for the coronavirus then I would have thought it "unethical" to breed from her.

She should be tested anyway, but Id absolutely certainly not breed from her, the breed may be "rare" (its not actually, its just not popular (snowshoe)) but breeding from animals and lines with such diseases present will render it extinct before long!

I have just had the results of Lichen's titre test. The test is done (for some unknown reason) in multiples of 80 and her result is 80 - which is the lowest it could possibly be, It means that she has been exposed to the virus and herr body has dealt with it.

She has just got a new tank of goldfish so hopefully she can continue to enjoy this for many years to come.
