Well i've heard lots of different time frames some at 4 some at 5 and some at 6

I can understand that different people have different time-scales but as your vet is the one who will be doing the op, I personally would be guided by his/her professional opinion in this case.

Velvet tears: i would go on what your vet advises, they must have good reason to advise spaying mum at 4 weeks post birth. It is better to be safe than sorry and have mum "caught" at 5 or 6 weeks if she came into season again. Think of how hard that would be on her body so soon after her first quite large litter.

Please remember if you have an un-neutered male in you apartment that your female cat can come back into season very quickly when the kittens are still feeding so that might be way your vet reccomended early neutering.
Also she will still produce some milk if the kittens are suckeling so it wont drop of competely.
Perhaps you should neuter all the other cats in the houshold asap then you wont have to spey mother cat to early!
