Earthquake!!

Here in Washington .... well in Virginia actually, but felt here and down as far as North Carolina, almost unheard of here in the Mid Atlantic. It was a good one 5.8 magnitude and lasted 30 - 45 seconds, I was really really scared! The whole building started shaking and shaking; st first I thought it was something caused by the construction work that's going on in the area, but it was too severe ... thought it must be an earthquake and it was. I was just sitting reading the paper when the whole room started shaking ...knocked some plants off the stands but no other damage. Ran out in the hall to see other tenants who informed it had indeed been an earthquake. So back in to watch the TV ... other programs replaced by coverage. Leia was lying in the bed quite calmly during the whole thing ... I thought cats could sense earthquakes?

Anyhow, I'm OK, hope there will be no aftershocks!!

Re: Earthquake!!

Goodness Eileen, I'm glad you're ok although it must have given you a shock.

We had a small one here some years ago but I felt the movement, such a strange sensation that it's hard to describe.

You can see all the latest earthquakes around the world here, yours looks pretty big compared to the others. Scroll down from the map and you will see where and when they happened.

So pleased it didn't upset Leia

Re: Earthquake!!

Yes, lynz! We rarely have them on the East coast and when we do they are very mild. I have never been in one before and am still shaking! The TV just said this could be felt up in Toronto Canada! The whole building was moving!

Re: Earthquake!!

*hugs* How scary!!! I'm so glad you're alright Eileen. That's a mini-adventure you've had... and one I'm sure you could do without.

Now, do I advise something hot and sweet (for shock!) or something alcoholic (to calm the nerves) I wonder...

You decide!

*hugs*

Re: Earthquake!!

I think I'll breakout the martinis early!

Had a call from Chris, he and his mom were in the supermarket when it hit; the floor started shaking and things falling off shelves: they hightailed it out leaving the groceries.

This is the first mangnitude 5+ earthquake here since 1897!!!!!

Re: Earthquake!!

Carolyn called, she's OK too; she's on the 11th floor in her building and it really shook! I'm really surprised Leia didn't react at all. She's always been a cool, laid back cat (except when Onyx was in view!), but an earthquake?!
