First tomato!

One of the few good things to be said about the recent heat wave is that it has certainly hastened the ripening...picked my first tomato from the garden and had it at lunch today....dead ripe, warm & juicy!! Last year, first one was August 14th.

Don't think there is anything that beats a sunwarm tomato from your own garden.
How far back have you kept track?

Re: First tomato!

Hreow, I've kept a garden journal for years, mostly noting planting dates, germination times, blooming dates, etc. Not regularly and sometimes forget to make entries. But it is fun to look back at things. And yes, nothing like that first tomato! Even the ones at the market that are supposedly locally grown aren't the same. I'm looking forward to doing potatoes for the first time next year...!

Re: First tomato!

I can see how a journal like yours would give a good sense of continuation and satisfaction.
I'm just too forgetful for it to ever happen.

Re: First tomato!

You are a good while behind me DM. I'm suprised as you have such warm summers. My first single tommy was ripe on 14 July - from the polytunnel though. I have picked a few cherry tomatoes frm outside on the allotment and the yellow ones in the hanging baskets at home are going great! As for the main crop in the polytunnel - suffice to say that my neighbours and family won't be buying tomatoes till well into the autumn.

Re: First tomato!

DM, we had a long, cool wet Spring, which slowed things sown considerably! then...th heat wave.. Didn't make the pedicted 100 degrees F yesterday, just...just!... 99 degrees! Today is supposed to be 101!! But a cool front is coming, hopefully...
