How to train teenagers

Right, I was so fed up with finding my teenage and 20's kids stuff about the kitchen I put a new roul into place.
What happens they leave something on the kitchen table ie a sweatshirt. The cats knock it onto the floor and play with it! Blue stands on it or makes a bed on it and hey presto it's dirty again.
What I have done this last week is give the said item two days, if not collected I chuck it out the back door on the ground (well it was going to have to be re washed anyway) Said teenagers not happy bunnys! Funnily enough they seem to have got the message.........na na na nana
