The alley cat

This is a poem I have just written as a friend of mine has finally managed to entice into his house, a cat that has been a stray for at least the three years he's lived in the house. Last night was his first time in the house all night.

And now he's finally come into the house Pete says he's there to stay he's an old cat at least 12 I would say.
Now Pete's being befriending him for about 2&1/2 years feeding him making sure he has access to the shed and a warm bed but finaly he has him in the house.

So he's home to stay. He used to live it appears with an old lady who died about 7years ago, in the same street. He disapeared then and came back about 3 years ago according to the neighbours. Seemingly looking - for someone somewhere

This is a poem for alleycats the world over may all their stories have such happy endings.

Now all he needs is a name.

The poem

I used to be called Puss
I really didn’t mind,
She used to call me nightly, “come in puss”
The scariest time was when she didn’t call me anymore
That was the worst times, and then I was sad

Because a cat without a name
Is cat that is unwanted, a cat that’s unloved?
I look into windows I peep through the doors
Then I see cats that I envy once more

Why do I watch those much loved cats?
Whose dish is never empty?
Whose fur is never dirty?
Whose heart is never broken?

Why because I used to be that cat
The cat by your fireside
The cat on your bed
The cat who knew only kindness, I have been searching for that

But now I’m a loner
Now I’m free agent
Now I’m a feral cat
Now I am that alley cat

So when you see that stray lonesome cat
Take a moment to think
And instead of shooing me away
Take pity and let me stay

For once upon a time I was a much loved lap cat
I could easily have been your cat
And now I’m older and weaker
It’s love that I’m seeking

So please let me stay, for just a few days
Let me shake off my hunger, rest my tired bones
Please let me sleep, for I am a tired old wanderer
Who’s come home to stay?

Finally, eventually I will pluck up the courage
To enter your doorway
I step onto carpet, I remember the smells, I remember the warmth.
Then I see the box in the corner is still talking.

To be loved again is odd, to be wanted again is strange
But I’m sure I can become accustomed to it all again
As long as you remember to call me in nightly,
Because I’m a cat whose wandering days are over.
I’ve a home again.

What did you think?
