He's only allowed out when I am in the garden. He comes to call anyhow and only goes into next doors garden. He is being neutered very soon so he'll have a bit more freedom then

You mentioned British shorthair? That "smile" is certainly BSH!!! they are known for it, I would say he definately has it in him, that temperament too.
