cat not using tray

Over the last couple of days, Harris has started using our spare bedroom to do his business. He still uses the tray to pee in but not for his other business. The trays have been cleaned to rule that out as a possible reason. We have no idea why he has started doing this. No idea what to do to stop this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: cat not using tray

Oh dear Pamela - that's not nice! I guess that Harris either feels insecure in his usual tray or is associating it with pain, if he is straining to go. Do his stools look normal? If so, you could just try putting an extra tray in the spare room at least as a temporary measure. Does he have an open tray or one with a lid? Perhaps a lidded tray would help if it's a security issue. Just my thoughts, hope someone else will be along to offer help.

Re: cat not using tray

He doesn't seem to have any pain association that I have seen. We have 2 covered over litter trays. I have thought of what may be causing an issue after reading your comment Angie so will try moving the other tray tonight as its beside the tumble dryer which has previously spooked him.

Hope you have solved the problem Pamela. Can you keep him out of the spare bedroom to try and break the pattern ?

Shelley we are worried that idle we close that room door then he will do it in another room. Going to scrub the trays tonight and move the tumble dryer 1 and see how he gets on

Re: cat not using tray

see what you mean Pamela. The only advice i can offer is to clean the area with biological washing powder, another thing i have heard but it's probably a myth is that they don't wee or poo where you feed them ?
I do hope it's the tumble dryer that is the problem

Re: cat not using tray

its totally away from their food, they get fed in the kitchen and the tumble dryer is in our big open walk in cupboard in the hallway
