Biting insects - preventatives and remedies

It's that time of year again so i thought we might be able to pool our collective *wisdom* on the above subject.

What, if any, remedy do you find effective in stopping the little varmints biting you in the first place?
What treatment alleviates the itch and prevents the huge lump/blister scenario/horror?

Standing a few paces from someone who is irresistible to the little...blighters usually works best. I'll have a look at the latest lot of chemicals we had for the Pennon adventure when I get home. They did alright against the midges.

Avon Skin So Soft oil is very good at repelling the mozzies.

If you have been bitten, a quick home remedy is to put toothpaste on the bite! It really does take the itch out of it

I was told to use this in two different countries while on holiday......

Re: Biting insects - preventatives and remedies

I was going to say toothpaste as well. USed to be told make sure it toothpaste with fluride in, but i think they all have it in these days.
Works for me.
I also have one of those little pen looking stick things you can rub on bites and stings, STINKS for a few seconds but works quickly.

I never use repellants, but I dont go on hoildays and we dont get many mozzies or anything where I live, so I only get the od bite.
