Dylan's been to the vets (1st time in Lincolnshire)He went in for his booster, the vet did a health check while he was there and it turns out he's got a heart murmur (don't know how serious yet) I'm still in a state of shock!  He's also got to lose a little more weight. The vet weighed him, checked him over and used the stethoscope then turned round and said "Did you know Dylan's got a heart murmur?" Just going to google heart murmurs  Can heart murmurs make a cat have a heart attack? Google is not helping

Quite a few of my cats have heart murmurs. It depends on the grade of murmur he has- 1 is slight, 5 it severe- really it is something to be aware of and just keep an eye on, the main thing to remember is that long term steroid use can make it much worse. |

The vet wants to see him in another 6 months to see how his heart's doing |

In a way that is good, the vet is going to monitor him. The things to watch out for are coughing, breathing difficulties and abdominal swelling ( due to fluid retention) but it all depends on the grade of mumrmur. Spice had a heart murmur and she lived to 19 and died because of her kidneys so don't worry too much, just keep and eye open for any changes in his demeanor. |

Cassie has a heart murmur but it's not severe, I just have to make sure she doesn't put on too much weight. Did the vet give you any idea of how bad it was? Did the vet weigh Dylan? |

Many cats live long lives with murmurs, as farthing said it depends on the severity. If the vet doesn't want to see him for 6 months I'd be inclined to think it wasn't a really serious one at this point. I can understand your shock at the news; why not give him a call when you're calmer and ask a few more questions, if just to ease your mind. ((((hugs))) to you both. |

what a shock! but as others have said hopefully it doesnt sound severe and he can have a long and healthy life |
