Either by the sun, in day to day life, or with a compass if it's somewhere you're not familiar with. Stand with your back to the house and look down the length of the garden. If the sun rises to your left, shines directly at you in the middle of the day and goes down to your right, you are south facing. If you use a compass, stand with your back to the house, look at the compass, the needle pointing north should be ponting towards you, if you are south facing. (Open the compass, let the needle settle, move the compass shell around until the N is directly under the needle. You can now check out 'all points of the compass'!
