Cat just diagnosed with diabetes

Hello all, I've introduced myself on the Newbies thread .

I used to belong here when I had my previous cats ( now deceased ) & always found people here very friendly & helpful.

I've got an 8 and a half year old rescue cat called Squiggles.

She's a little monster who keeps us on her toes ! but this week she's been diagnosed with diabetes, & has to go to the vets all day tomorrow to be assessed.

Later in the afternoon, my OH & myself have got to have a meeting with the vet to learn how to give Squiggles her insulin & find out if her diet will need to be changed, I must say I'm quite apprehensive about it all ! & I was wondering if there were any threads here that were particularly helpful, or whether I should just ask for advice when I need it ? Thanks .

Re: Cat just diagnosed with diabetes

Hello Lyn and Squiggles. Must be a difficult time learning how to adjust to looking after a diabetic cat. I am sorry, I cannot personally help, not gone through that with a cat. There are others here who have though and I hope someone will be along to help you soon. Just remember - that you speak for Squiggles, so be brave and ask your vet anything you want to know or are unsure about. Perhaps do a Google and make a list ... I know that always helps me focus on an issue. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I do hope your poor boy gets on OK Lyn. I've got diabetes myself, but I don't know anything about it in cats. Lots of luck with him.

Hope all goes well with Squiggles at the vets. My OH is diabetic but never had a cat with it. Considering how many cats we've had we've been very lucky as regards illness.

Re: Cat just diagnosed with diabetes

We have had 3 Diabetic cats here at the Clan cats, first one was a feral once stable resumed his indoor/outdoor life and came in every night at 7pm for his treat

Number 2 was my soul cat Sweetie again easily stabilised

Number 3 came from CP on foster on 10 units of insulin a day she was given 3 months when she came to us - I got another 2 years and 3 months with Miss Millie who died in my arms aged 17

We never changed to any special food and once the injections were shown it is very easy - I always fed a treat when giving the injection so they associated good things with it
