Incontenant AbbysinianMy son has a friend living in the London area who has an abbysinian (hope that's the right spelling) female of about nine months. Since they got her at about 10 weeks old she has been inclined to bouts of incontinance. particularly when she is asleep or over excited They have had her to a Vet and to a specialist, both of whom said wait and see what happens. Recently they approached the vet again because they want her spayed, the vet said he would get in touch with the specialist and get back to them - he hasn't. They don't want to wait any longer and are thinking ot trying a different vet. What I would like to know (and so of course would they) is if anyone on these pages has had a problem of an incontinent cat, or know of anyone who has, and what was the final outcome if the kitten was spayed, did it make it worse or better? And if anyone had a cat with the problem and had kittens from it were they affected i.e. is it an hereditary problem. Hope someone might be able to help - Logoes

So sorry I cant help but I'm sure someone here will be able to. I have had this type of thing with dogs and they can give them a syrip..propaline (sp) to tighten up the muscles round the bladder, dont know if it works with cats though. |

Have her kidneys been screened as bouts like this could be down to kidney problems. Certain kidney diseases can be hereditary but until you know what it is can't tell for definite. I wouldn't have thought spaying would have made the situation worse but I haven't had any experience personally. I would go for another vets opinion. Good luck. |

Perhaps the Vet was concerned about worsening the incontinence if she was spayed? Sphincter incontinence does happen when animals are neutered on occasions, not known it in Cats though. Could it be a urine infection? Dawn. |

No, I don't think it will be down to any infection or kidney problem , she has been under veterinary supervision for several months and seen a specialist,and her owners had a long phone call with one of our previous vets who is a personal friend of ours. She has improved as she has grown older and they are managing to cope with her but obviously would like her 'cured' if poss. Really I was hoping for feedback from someone who might have already experienced this problem or have heard of it. particularly if there is a possibility of it being an inherited con dition Logoes |

Sorry, Logoes, have had no experiece with this...maybe another consultation with a different vet...or maybe discuss with the breeder who might know...? |

Hi Logoes You could get the vet to test the cat for Feline Leukemia Virus as it has been reported that cats tested positive for the virus show signs of urinary incontinence usual at rest which sounds like this little girl. It is worth a try. All I can come up with at the mo but will keep looking. |
