Just having a moan

please excuse my whining I know some off you have worse problems than me. But I am currently in so much pain I don't know what to do for the best. I suffer from Hypermobility syndrome which is causing my joint to be very painful. It also means that even the stongest presciption pain killer are useless. I have also got a slipped disk in my back which is causing more pain. Both of which I have had for years aand nboone seems to be able to do anything about them. So I am left sitting here in tears wondering when it will stop hurting. I am 22 and just want to be pain free for once, so I can get on and live my life. Because at the moment the pain keeps stopping me.
Anyway I hope you don't mind me moaning on here but I didn't want to worry my mum.

I am off to college now so don't worry if you leave a comment and don't get an immediate reply. I should be back on about 6.30-7pm at the latest.

Any advice or pain relief idea would be gratefully recived. I have got a magnetic bracelet but it doesn't seem to work.

Sally

Oh Sally, I am so sorry to read about your problems and do really hope things improve for you.

Have you tried a TENS machine for pain relief? I believe that you can hire them from the chemist if you wanted to try before you buy sort of speak.

Also have you had any referrals to a specialist for your problems?

{{{Hugs to you today}}} and hope that your pain eases soon x

Re: Just having a moan

Moan away girl - no problems.

Have you tried a TENS? http://www.tens.co.uk/acatalog/shop.html
It copes with childbirth pain and may work well for you
Bowen Technique
http://www.bowentechnique.org.uk/

If I were you (you must get fed up hearing that) or, perhaps more accurately, if you were my daughter, I would recommend that you ask around and find a good practitioner who does sports physio, sports massage and maybe other techniques as well. In my view thay are more familiar with our skeleton and with skeletal/joint/muscle problems and are better at dealing with them than GPs are. Their rememdies or therapies will be drug free.

I have a bit of experience with a frozen shoulder. Nasty, debilitating thing and the doctors were no help at all - just gave me stronger and stronger painkillers which had a worse and worse effect on my gut. I was like a junkie waiting for the 4 hours to be up so I could dose again on 2 co-codamol, 1 nurofen and 2 aspirin. Go to bed axhausted at 10pm, wake in pain at 1am and that would be that.
So, my recovery started with acupuncture, which didn't seem to do anything at the time, but did relax me greatly, followed by weekly aromatherapy massage with an excellent practitioner. Bit of Tens pain relief along the way and that was that. Took about 6 months but as I had been ill for 18 months ....

Good luck to you.

Re: Just having a moan

Sally, you moan as much as you need to, that's what friends are for! I think you need to go back to your doctor and say that something has to done differently. Pain has to be managed, it never disappears, but it can be kept at a level which means you can lead a relatively normal life. You may need a different cocktail of drugs to help you, also talk about surgical options for your disc!
Things I have tried for back and joint pain, with differing levels of success (you need to see what works for you) are;

physiotherapy
facet joint injections
tens machine
painkillers
heat pads
heat patches (the ones that stick to your skin)
magnetic anklets
bubble therapy (one of theose jets you put in your bath)

there are others but I can't remember right now what they are. try keeping a diary for a week or two, write down exactly how your pain feels and how it makes you feel about yourself and your life. take that with you to your doctors. PM me any time Sally if you need to ((hugs))

Re: Just having a moan

Sorry to read about all the pain you are in Sally and I'm afraid I can't add anymore to the good advice you have been given above.
I get a lot of back pain also, due to a curvature of the spine and I find that physiotherapy gives me some relief.

I do hope you can find someone or something that will help you......in the meantime please let your frustration out here, we are here to listen and help where possible (((hugs)))

DM, my doctor prescribes me a pain killer initially for a frozen shoulder, they never seem to work, so he then gives me a steroid injection in the offending shoulder which gives me relief within 24 hours...... maybe worth a try for you next time?

Re: Just having a moan

Thanks for all your help and support.
I have tried acupuncture which I found to be too painfull as I have extremely sensitive skin and can't stand needles.
I have also tried some physio but that makes it worse rather than better, I think that it part of it you have to get worse before you get better.
I have got a magnetic anklet thing that I don't think is doing anything but it isn't doing any harm either.
Part of the hypermobility is a very high tolerance to pain killers and local anestetics.
heat seems to help a tiny bit so I make sure I have a hot bath every night. But even though the weather is hot I still sem to be bad which isc onfusing me as it is usually the cold damp weather that is the worst.
I have got an appointment on the 19/5/07 to see a back specialist. So we will see what he says.

dinahsmum I will have a look at the links as they sound good.

Does anyone know of any homeopathic treatment for pain relief?

Thanks for all your support and hugs they are much needed and gratefully recieved.

Sally
