Evening everyone. Need a bit of help please!! We have put new wallpaper up in the hallway and have come home to a scratched corner with ripped paper. The culprit??? Harris!! We caught him doing it right in front of us!! Does anyone have any idea how to stop this? He generally hasnt ever bothered with the walls except bear wood

Oh dear, Pamela. that's got to be stopped- naughty Harris.

I don't know if it's true as I have never had to try it but they say lemon smells repel cats, so you could try putting an air freshener or spray some lemony stuff near the place. I'm sure some of the girls will have suggestions too, good luck x

I've heard tin foil works, maybe tape some over the place with some removable tape (magic tape) .... can't say I've done it but have read other folks having success with it. It may just make him move elsewhere though.

Re: cat scratching wallpaper

My cats dug up the corners of my new carpet, so I can sympathise!
How many scratching posts does your Harris have in the house/area? I'd suggest providing places you don't mind him scratching on near by, then making it less nice for him to play with the wallpaper. I've also heard tinfoil works as they don't like the texture, that could work as a temporary measure while you wean him on to a better scratching place. Or a sticky surface, cats don't like sticky things on their paws either, the name of the thing I'm thinking of has gone out of my head though sorry :/
What I did for mine was try and tire them out a bit more at play time, that generally stops them finding ways to entertain themselves as they're too tired to
GL!

Re: cat scratching wallpaper

Thanks for the advice. They have a 6ft scratchpost which is like a multigym! And also another 1 that he balanced on to scratch the paper higher than he already had!!

Re: cat scratching wallpaper

Oh no, is the paper embossed at all? I made the mistake of putting up embossed wallpaper and the cats just loved to sink their claws into it, the problem was as soon as I managed to stop them from scratching one bit they started on another.

A few other suggestions you might want to try though are...
sprinkle the area with pepper...
Place double sided sticky tape or that anti scratch stuff on the floor...

get imaginative and set up an "act of god" something like precariously stacked cans or something that will fall over and give them a fright but not hurt them. I did this with Eva as she would get on top of the kitchen work top and then on top of the fridge and scratch the paper near the ceiling. Worked a treat.

Re: cat scratching wallpaper

Its a flat paper Elaine. At the moment I have the hall scratch post in front of it and my walking boots on top to stop him standing on it!! Has worked so far!!
