Does clicker training work?Hi I've just been reading about clicker training for cats and wondered if any of you have used it at all? If so, what did you use it for and did it work? Look forward with interest to your replies

Quite apart from using a clicker, shaking a bag of Dreamies works well at getting my cats' attention! |

Hi Angieh Thanks for the links (I'll do a search first next time)! The articles are very interesting and I think I might give it a try. My two are both around 3, but from what I've read you can train them at any age with (probably a lot of) patience. They have both just started to go out as we've just moved to a new house that is away from a road. It looks as if Dilly has encountered one of the neighbourhood cats as she came in a couple of days ago with a big scratch on her nose and has been reluctant to go far since. She's also started to hiss and lash out at my other cat who she's lived and played happily with for over two years and he doesn't seem to understand what's going on - poor chap. I'm wondering if training might help in some way. My vet has given her an injection to 'chill her out' (the first of a course of two) which has seemed to help a bit, but she is still behaving rather oddly. Hopefully the second one will help even more. I'll post back if/when I get some results from the 'clicker'. |

You could also try Feliway, which is a pheromone based product to help settle her in. It comes in an aerosol and plug-in form and is cheaper to buy online. Hope she settles soon. |

I was going to suggest a Feliway also, and perhaps some Bach's Rescue Remedy. I hope she settles soon too. Good luck!  |

Thanks for your advice. I have a couple of Feliway diffusers on the go, but haven't tried Bach (I use this myself sometimes and swear by it)! |

My husband clicker trained our cat Rag to 'Sit' and to 'lay down' on command, Rags is a very fuss hungry cat so he was only rewarded with lots of strokes and fuss rather than a tasty treat. It was useful to get him to settle down at bed time because he would just stomp around on the bed for half and hour before laying down, then we could just tell him to lay down and he would. I don't know if clicker training could be used in a more useful way though! |

Sorry I haven't been back earlier - but thanks for your suggestions! I've been manically busy so haven't had a chance to start training yet. Hopefully I'll give it a go this weekend! |
