Phoebe home from the vets.

Phoebe came back home from the vets this dinnertime. She is feeling very sorry herself mainly because of the collar.

She had been having treatment for a week for a serious sequestra. She had to have her eye washed out with a special solution and then drops in 8 times a day so wasn't very happy with me. She was due back for a check up today but yesterday blood appeared in the eye so I took her back.

My vet, Jill, who is an eye specialist examined her and said that the eye was very near rupturing and that with the treatment Phoebe was having she should have shown some improvement. If we had continued with the treatment there was a 20% chance that the eye would rupture and if it did Phoebe would lose her eye. Having had cats in the pat with the same problem I opted for the operation.

They took her in and started operating straight away, luckily I had not giving her any food as I thought this might be the outcome. The sequestra was very deep and they haven't managed to get all of it away but they have got the majority of it. She now has a contact lens in and the third eyelid stitched over. She needs to have drops put in 4 times a day and to go back next Friday to check that the third eyelid is still stitched in the correct position and that th stitches aren't rubbing.

As they were operating I asked the vets if they would spay Phoebe at the same time and they agreed. Unfortunately the spay wasn't straight forward either. She had massive ovarian cysts and that also took longer than they expected.

All in all she was on the operating table for ove an hour. As they didn't start operating until 2.30pm and due to the length of time the op took they decided to keep her in to administer regular pain relief and I picked her up today. She is fine in herself just doesn't like the collar.

What a lot to fo through, hopefully she'll feel better for it in the long run.

She is just lying in her box. Hopefully they will have removed enough and the remainder will respond to the treatment. The op involves them scraping a layer of the eye and in doing so removing the sequestra. The problem is if it returns because the layer left is so much thinner they can only operate so many times. The amount of times the operation can be done depends on how much they took away and as it was deep I doubt another operation would be an option.

I have everything crossed it clears up and doesn't return.
