Found the film - 1964 Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell and Melina Mecouri. I also found out where Topkapi is, but I've already said I didn't know, so that would be cheating ............

You're right Angie, Ustinov not Topol. Both equally charismatic and talented. We saw Topol in a revival of Fiddler on the Roof at the Palladium in the mid-90s . . . totally brilliant!!
