I suspect plant breeding through the years has made for ones that are less bitter. I just remember the ones we used to get as kids - boiled for ages, horrible taste, nasty colour ....... nuff said!

Re: Christmas - both sides of the Pond

Kazz, to reply to your post, we do have carol services; some schools have plays/pageants. Pantomimes, not to my knowledge, at least not in my part of the country. And no Christmas cracker hats; that's a custom that never crossed the Pond.

Because of the separation of Church and State most public schools and institutions are a bit wary about displays like Nativity scenes, etc; they bring the atheists out of the woodwork with law suits...

Isn't it strange that some things cross the pond some don't.........I don't think a house in this country celebrates Christmas with out crackers...they are called crackers because their is a "crack sound" made when you pull them person holds either end.....

Do you pull the wishbone there and make a wish?

Re: Christmas - both sides of the Pond

Pantomimes! That reminds me. It must have been about ten years ago that a group (all adult) from work went to a local but professional performance of Cinderella. Behind us (yes, they were Behind You! ) was an American Mom and her two boys, maybe 5 and 8. The younger one sat quietly, probably in amazement all through. But I loved the older one, when the nasty Ugly Sisters, after bullying and teasing and generally being horrid to Cinderella all through, held her between them, centre stage, and said 'Shall we pinch her, children?' (Horrible things Pantomimes, aren't they? ) Of course, the local children all shouted No! No! but our little Yank was more active than that - 'You just leave her alone - or I'll come up there and kick your butts'
Lovely!

Re: Christmas - both sides of the Pond

Seems even the adults are abit confuzzled by the pantomime rituals. Lorna Luft ( Judy Garland's daughter) has been appearing as the Wicked Witch of the West in a panto of T.W.o.Oz.in Manchester; she was upset when the audience booed her onstage. Paul O'grady the TV host had to explain to her that this was a huge compliment and all part of the panto scene. but she can't get her head around it !

Haven't been to a panto for years, I must remedy that!
