Re: Jobless and skint, but so happy

Eileen - overtime is only paid where an employment contract stipulates. In lower/middle management roles upwards you are expected to work the hours needed to get the job done and overtime is not paid unless by exception.

I think your partner did the right thing Wendy. Do think about the stress involved in tribunals before embarking on that road though . . . I looked into it when I was 'asked to leave' from my job at a high-profile premium brand, but you need to have so much evidence to prove your case that it's almost not worth the bother.

Pauls got an interview today

Even if he doesnt get the job its a good start and its made him feel 100 times better about quiting as hes been feeling pretty bad about it

Hes been so worried about us not having any money, so getting an interview makes him realsie he can do better than working for that a*** hole

I'm so pleased that he got an interview so quickly. Even if he doesn't get the job he know's that there are other's out there.
Good luck to you both. xx

Interesting, but surprising about the overtime. Here, unless you're really management (i.e. have the ability to hire and fire, supervise, etc.), overtime is mandated at time and one half for all hours worked over 40 per week. Of course, union contracts can have different pay schedules; this only applies to the majority of workers. Funny how labor laws differ, isn't it? I always learn something here!
