Re: Friend or Foe????

Donna I would say they look to me like cats normal cats - not overly unhappy or anything. But you appear to have a problem. Sorry to ask this I know I should know - as you've obviously posted in the past about them but my memory sin't what it was - sorry.
1. Are they the same age?
2. Who arrived first and at what age for each of them?
3. Does one go out more than the other?
4. I assume they are both spayed.
5. Do you get any invaders through the cat flap?

Not meaning to pry at all - honestly.

Karen

Re: Friend or Foe????

Well they look ok to me, both have their ears forward (a good sign) and they are close enough to one another. Do they hiss and spit at each other Donna?

Not prying - any help is appreciated!!

1. They are more or less same age - 6 weeks between them.
2. Chloe arrived at 6 weeks old then Misty when she was six weeks old.
3. Misty is preferring outdoors only slightly more than Chloe.
4. Both speyed at same time.
5. Have had trouble with catflap invaders and garden invaders!

What does this all mean Kazz????????

Not all the time. But on occassion. Every now and then there is a fight with miaows.

When there is hissing it is normally Misty hissing at Chloe. Although Misty seems larger and more dominant it is normally Chloe that springs on her from all angles. There is usually a few minutes brawling then there is a stand off.

Misty seems totally happy and friendly in the house with us but again tends to hide out of the way.

Re: Friend or Foe????

My previous cat Lucy always hissed at Arthur, but they ate together and also slept on the same bed, so I decided it cannot be that bad!!! lol

Do they eat/sleep together?

Re: Friend or Foe????

They eat together although I have started to feed Chloe away from Misty to avoid stress. They dont sleep together - Chloe normally on my bed and Misty either under my bed or in Emma's room.

They dont touch each other at all unless they are fighting!!

Re: Friend or Foe????

Had a reply from the cat behaviour lady Elaine recommended I contacted. Hope she doesnt mind me posting it here, but it might be of help to someone else, or maybe someone here could comment further:

Hi Donna just a few things for you to try:

Firstly, Misty will have 'problems' as at 6 weeks of age she will have been taken from her mother far too soon, so her social skills and the way she reacts towards other cats has not been fully learnt. A bit like us having a couple of driving lessons - we could get about but we would be a complete menace on the road!

If you go on to my website on the links page: http://wizz-catz.co.uk/recommendations.html and click on the vet uk site (second one down - may take a few seconds for the page to show fully) When you are on their website just put in Feliway in the search box. I would suggest that you get a plug in diffuser for the living room, and then also buy a spray - which is a lot more 'portable'.

By the sounds of it you only have one litter tray. I would suggest you have three down for now - and in different areas if at all possible so that Chloe feels free to use one - it is unlikely that Misty can use all three at once! Another way around this is to somehow section off part of the house so the girls are separate for some time - do you work? Is it possible that one could have the run of upstairs, and one downstairs. This way Chloe would have the tray to herself during the day and it would be interesting to see if she then uses it properly. If you can separate them for about 10 hours, so they can completely relax on their own and Chloe doesn't have to keep watching her back.

Limit the time outside if this is stressful - let them out while you are in, and keep them in while you are out. That way if there is any conflict you can immediately get the cats in. Another reason for having several trays down. Imagine how you would feel not being able to go to the toilet because you were in fear of 'who' might be in the toilet when you get there. In cats you get what is called 'diverted aggression' - something may go off outside that you are not aware of, but when the girls are back in the house one of them may just turn on the other for what appears to be no apparent reason.

Playtime is good too - again there is a sheet in the behavioural section on the website and maybe if Misty has enough things to chase and plays interactive games with you, it might help so that she doesn't see Chloe as fair game.

I would always recommend keeping your cats in at night anyway, and if there is no friction at night, you can continue with your usual night time routine of having Chloe on your bed. Does Misty have her own bed under your bed, or is she just sleeping on the floor?

How do you feel about the above do you think you will be able to implement most of the things?

I am happy to give things a go Elaine. I dont suppose the cats will ever be best friends, but a fairly happy co-existance would benefit Chloe's stress mess!!

I assume as both cats were with me by six weeks that I have two problem cats that are unsocialised!! Always thought it was only Misty that was too young as I am convinced it was before six weeks.

I have two trays now (must get a bigger second one though as it is a kitten tray!) and will see how that goes. Not had an accident for over 24 hours now.

I will get the Feliway stuff as soon as I can (costly ) and I will keep them separate whilst I am working tomorrow.

I will also keep the catflap locked until I am home and then let them out of isolation and into the garden together.

Need to encourage Misty to play as she doesnt really play at all. Chloe loves it so will continue with her!

Must just keep being positive and look to a way forward.
