We are thinking of using the 1ft sq tiles in a slightly darker brown than our kitchen units.

On the walls or on the floor Nae?? It's just that big tiles can look a little odd on walls (IMHO . . . )

With regards colour - too much teracotta/beige/brown can make a room look too 'warm'. It's useful to add a bit of a cooler colour to balance. Something like a duck-egg blue or maybe even a cool grey could work alternatively a nice dull but pale olive green, not too dark but not vivid like, for instance mint green.
