Re: Christmas decorations - when do you put them up?

I like to get them up on the 1st Dec, but we never seem to find the time so whenever we get chance really & as we are still finishing off the new kitchen, we have no spare time at present

Re: Christmas decorations - when do you put them up?

Usually 2nd week in Dec, or the weekend that leaves one weekend between Christmas, however may be next week Tuesday/Thursday for the outside decorations....before the kids start knocking the door again like last year. The tree weekend after next so about the 13/14th, for the tree.

They come down before new years eve not really sure why however something to do with a family death ages ago..going into the new year with a tree up so in effect the tree is only up once in each year....

Re: Christmas decorations - when do you put them up?

Usually a week to 10 days before Christmas and we take them down on the epiphany (6th Jan). It irritates my pants off that houses are decorated in November and first week in December, it takes the magic out of Christmas and makes it such a long, non special occasion. If I had small children now, I'd love to do what angieh's parents did for her. That must be so very magical for small children but my children have always enjoyed 'helping' so I have always let them.

Yes Fran, it was very special and gives me a lovely memory of how much my Dad did for me - I can't actually remember how old I was, but it was certainly pre-school, in the 50's and I remember it generally as quite a bleak time.

Re: Christmas decorations - when do you put them up?

At home when I was little my Dad was quite strict about decorations only going up the weekend before Christmas - and we were only allowed festoons and paper chains in our rooms; tree only in the 'grown up' space (something I've inherited from him I suppose).

I don't think my boys would wait that long; their school has trees etc up now I know what you mean Fran about the protraction of Christmas, there are houses here that already have their electric sleighs on the roof and mooning santas (yes, really) hanging off their drainpipes. I find this all so depressing and it completely does ruin any magic associated with the season.

I couldn't agree with you more, Yola! When I was very little my parents always did the tree, etc. on Christmas Eve while I was sleeping; it was so magical waking up Christmas day to see the wonderful transformation!
