Indeed I do; also a thing that I don't know the name of: a long metal bar with a U shaped top that fits under the doorknob and a large rubber foot, so that of someone does try to force the door open it stops them... it's hard to explain. I have one for the basement door also, as well as a chain there too. Not that I am at all security conscious, of course....

Seriously, thanks all for your concern! I've taken all reasonable steps to keep the house secure, so am not really worried; although as I said it's unnerving having an incident just a block and a half away!

Is it possible you could arrange some kind of phone in with your neighbour/s? You know some kind of thing like calling eachother morning and night just to check in that all is well?

We don't have an official "phone tree"as such, but we do keep an eye out for one another; it's very neighborly; most everyone has lived here for ages and we all know one another. And I had two phone calls the morning after the TV from friends checking on me!

I read the eport from the link you first put up Eileen and they said it was a friendly safe neighbourhood.

It must be unnerving but you are right, as long as you are careful you'll be fine.

It is! The most common crime is theft from auto; major crime is almost unheard of in this area. Petty thievery (plants, bicycles, that sort of thing), and opportunistic burglaries when idiots leave their doors unlocked, drunks leaving the bars at closing, domestic altercations....nothing serious! It's a very safe part of the City. I'm just cautious by nature ....
