View Full Version : Worried....

I'm so worried about Cassie at the moment. She was sick Friday night, watery with a bit of fur in it. Then Saturday morning she managed to climb into a large box in the bedroom and has been there ever since. She hasn't eaten or drank anything. Also she hasn't been to the toilet since Friday night. She doesn't attempt to sit up at all and I've felt her all over to see if she is in pain anywhere but she seems ok that way.

I've just steamed her some fish to try to tempt her to eat but she's just not interested. I don't know what else I can do for her.

I'm going to ring the vet for an appointment tomorrow.......why do these things always seem to happen on a weekend when everything is closed?

Sorry to go on but I'm really worried about her.

Oh Mags, I do understand, your doing the right thing by getting her to the vets asap, does she go out? I would keep her in until you get her to the vets.

Just keep her warm and check on her every so often leave some fish and water by her side.

We are all thinking of you keep us posted.

Thanks Abbi!
She's still the same. Usually when I carve the joint she appears at my side for 'tasters' but there was no sign of her today. Do you think I should lift her out of the box and try her in her litter tray as I'm concerned that she hasn't done anything since Friday?

Abbi
12-12-2004, 03:44 PM
Yeah maybe and give her a good feel all over - put the litter tray next to her in the room she is in and maybe take the box away?

Let me know Mags x

Has she got a temperature? - are her ears hot?

Maybe she would drink some cooled fish broth?

I'm sure a trip to the vets tomorrow is the right thing. Hope a dose of antibiotoc will sort her out.

Mags
12-12-2004, 06:12 PM
Her ears are cold DM and I've just tried her with some fish broth but she just isn't interested. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

I put her in her litter tray Abbi, but still nothing. She stepped out of it ok so I think her legs are alright.
Can't wait to get her to the vet tomorrow.

Abbi
12-12-2004, 06:16 PM
Keep us informed Mags, do hope she is ok, I'll be at work tomorrow but will keep logging in to see if she is ok. It's weird that it's all of a sudden and no real symptoms apart from her being sick once?

Thinking of you.

Mags you mentioned that she coughed up water and hair.Sounds to me that she is packed out with hair. All cats suffer from this including shorthaired cats. She will need to see vet who can giver her somthing to help pass this through. You can get hairball remedy which is good stuff.just rub on feet and they lick it off.Another thing that will help is offering her grass.Yes i know sounds daft but grass contains various things including a laxative that cleans there system out. Most will readly eat it if they need it.This will make her sick but its natures way of dealing with things.Because my Persians are house bound and can suffer hairballs they are offered grass weekly. We dont get hairballs anymore.
It may not be this problem but it was just a thought
I hope she feels beeter soon

well its worth a try anyhow

Mags
12-12-2004, 11:24 PM
Thanks Sam, I do hope it is something as simple as that. She does moult a lot even though she gets brushed daily. I think I am more worried because she hasn't 'spent a penny' since Friday and I've started wondering if it's anything to do with her kidneys.

shonedek
13-12-2004, 01:02 AM
The problem is that there are so many things it could be.The best place is the vets who will run various tests.I do hope she is fine.Let us know. :)

Azz
13-12-2004, 01:16 AM
Aww hope Cassie is feeling better soon Mags xx

Yeah I also think it sounds like an upset tummy, and more than likely is xcess fur coupled with eating something that didn't agree with her tummy.

Get a clean kitchen towel and soak it with some water and drop some small droplets on her mouth by sqeezing the kitchen towel, in case she's thirsty but doesnt have the energy to sip some. As it's important she gets fluid.

Let us know how you get on at the vets and I hope shes feeling better soon - give her a big hug from me xx

Mags
13-12-2004, 11:47 AM
I've just returned from the vet and they are keeping Cassie in for at least 24 hours. She will have an anaesthetic, have a drip put in, blood tests and liver and kidney examinations. Her temperature this morning was 104'.
I really didn't expect her to be kept in, poor angel. I'll probably be sat by the phone all day waiting for a call from them.

Will post more news when I get it.

Naomi
13-12-2004, 12:02 PM
Awww Mags I hope they find out what's wrong with her :(

She's in the best place and I'd be exactly the same. When my bitch Tammy went in for her op I was like an idiot about the place. I kept looking at the clock and wishing it to be time for me to phone to see if she was gonna be okay to come home.

Abbi
13-12-2004, 12:35 PM
Oh Mags, we are all with you on this - thinking of you so much - as Na said she is in the right place, please keep us informed on how she is.

Mags any news yet?

Mags
13-12-2004, 07:29 PM
Have had a call from the vet to say there is no problem with her liver and kidneys(thank goodness). She still has a temperature and is still on the drip and they have put her on antibiotics and painkillers.
They've tried her with food but isn't interested so said they'll tempt her with fresh chicken or fish tomorrow. Also there's been no joy with the litter tray (4 days now).
She is a very timid cat anyway and they said she was trying to hide when anyone came by so they have moved her to a quiet
dark end of the of the room to try to give her some peace (ahh!)
But as yet they can't say what's wrong with her.

Thanks everyone for all your concern, I really do appreciate it.

Abbi
13-12-2004, 07:36 PM
Oh Mags - so what now - are they running tests? It's so worrying - how old is she? I wonder what is wrong?

Just you saying that they have moved her to a dark place says it all to me - that they understand her needs and are doing the very best for her - sounds like a nice practice.

dinahsmum
13-12-2004, 08:05 PM
Hope everything will be fine.

the fluids and antibiotics are bound to help.

Fingers crossed for really good news in the morning

Mags
13-12-2004, 08:13 PM
Abbi, she is 7 so not old by any means. They did say the senior vet would see her tomorrow so perhaps they will come up with something then.
And yes, it is a very nice practice.....they make you feel that your pet is well looked after. We changed vets after Sam and have found this one to be much better.

Thanks DM, I'm just hoping the antibiotics and fluids will make her perk up a bit.

shonedek
13-12-2004, 09:09 PM
well at least her kidneys and liver are fine.Thats always one big hurrdle to get over. Are they doing anything about the hair she coughed up?She wont eat if shes packed out, perhaps they will xray her to see whats going on inher stomach and intestines.Shes in the right place and as you said shes not an old cat so time is on her side.We are all thinking of her,

Abbi
13-12-2004, 09:31 PM
Mags, I am sure she will be fine and they will get her on the road to recovery real soon - as Sam said she might have a blockage, which will show up on an x.ray. I changed vets when I moved and now have a very good practice that I am very happy with.

Mags
13-12-2004, 10:21 PM
The vet didn't comment on the hair that was coughed up nor did they mention X rays. Maybe they are waiting to see how she reacts to the drip and antibiotics before taking it any further.

Naomi
13-12-2004, 11:07 PM
Awww Mags I'm glad it's not her kidney's or liver. Finger's crossed they can solve the problem

Abbi

Update us today Mags when you get any news. Hope your ok. x

Mags
14-12-2004, 02:39 PM
Just had a call from the vet to say there has been no change in Cassie. They've been unable to get her temperature down-its now 104 1/2' and she still isn't eating. She has passed a little urine though. She is still on the drip and antibiotics and they've started her on another medication today.
If there's no improvement tomorrow she'll see the ultra sound specialist on Thursday. It's so worrying.
We were also told we could go in to see her tomorrow afternoon, which I'm looking forward to even though she's unwell.
Seems like its a case of waiting now til they find out what's wrong with her.

Abbi
14-12-2004, 03:19 PM
Oh Mags, give her a big kiss from us all tomorrow. It must be so hard to work out what is wrong with her. Poor little gril. Thinking of you all the time - Abbi x

Azz
14-12-2004, 05:28 PM
Aww Mags *hugs* I am sure they are doing everything they can.

Might be an idea to ask them or to suggest their may be a hair blockage as the guys above have said, cos if it is it needs to be clear before she will feel any better? Also, have they checked for any poisons? Maybe she ate a mouse or sommin that ate some? She might need a specific antibody for that. But I gues they would have thought of that as you told her she is an outdoor cat.

Hope she gets well soon and Im sure seeing you will give her a big boost.
Try not to worry as you gotta look after yourself as well.
xxx

Mags
14-12-2004, 07:34 PM
Thanks Abbi.

Azz, I'll mention about the hair again tomorrow but I would have thought they'd have considered that as I'd already told them yesterday. Worth another go though. Also I assume they would have thought of poisons.
Can't wait to see her tomorrow!

Abbi

Mags im so sorry, but it sounds like shes getting the best. The scan should come up with something as this is much clearer than xray, they can pick up so much scanning.Bringing in a scanner means they can rule things out so much quicker.
Never assume anything with vets even if you have to keep repeating yourself as sometimes its the little things that dont get noticed. They are there for YOU not the other way round.Thinking of you Sam

Mags
15-12-2004, 02:56 PM
Thanks Sam!

Well, the latest on Cassie is a very slight improvement overnight as they got her to eat a tiny piece of chicken. She still has a temperature and a very tense stomach. They've increased her analgesic pain killers and she's still on the drip and antibiotics.

They are now thinking it could be pancreatitis and want to keep her in at least another 24hours to monitor her.
We're going in to see her later on today, I shall be interested to see how she reacts when she sees us.

Abbi

Mags
15-12-2004, 10:36 PM
Been in to see Cassie and at first she didn't take any notice of us. But after a few rubs around her neck she crawled over to us. She had some tuna in her bowl so I offered it to her and she looked really interested at first but then she just turned her head away. It seems she's hungry but refuses it. Her leg is bandaged up with a red (chrismassy?) crepe bandage and the drip doesn't seem to bother her. She looks quite comfortable laying on a sheepskin blanket.......and I felt a lot better after seeing her.
Just have to wait for tomorrows report now.

Azz
15-12-2004, 10:54 PM
Aww glad she looks comfortable at least. I'm sure she'll be fine, may have just got a throat infection? would explain the temp and loss fo appetite?

Bit better news today! She has eaten a bit of food in the night and.......her temperature was down this morning! They want to keep her on the drip for another day, see if her appetite improves and they said we MAY be able to have her home tomorrow. It was such a relief hearing todays report.

I'd like to say thank you to everyone for supporting me this past week, you're all great! xx

Mags
16-12-2004, 04:20 PM
Sam, how is your little one now? Sorry to hear she had to stay in as well, I do hope she is getting better. It's awful when they are so sensitive isn't it, they just want their 'mum'.
I was wondering if Cassie perked up a bit becaused we went in to see her.

Im so glad for you Mags.Fingers crossed she will be home tomorrow. My little girl Ted picked up a very nasty virus. She went down hill very quick within 6 hours of us noticing she wasnt right. She has lost about 50% body weight so things have been very tense because of permanent damage.tests have shown her major organs are fine so thats something. Our battle now is trying to get her to eat.She hates meat of any kind so were buying just about every kind of biscuit you can imagine.Sure we could open our own pet shop.Shes started to nibble so we can just hope it will get better.Staying in vets is no option with her

Mags

Ted is only2 1/2.I also have her sister Bug and both were handreared,so are very dear to me.They all are dear but these two are special.Shes eating a little so its just fingers crossed that she can pick up.Bugs knows shes not well and is never far from her. They are extremly close as in all honestly they should not of survived as babys. But they did and proved the vets wrong, however because of there dreadfull start ,they only weight 5 1/2 pounds and thats the 2 together so the big weight lose from Ted has been worrying to say the least.will let you know how she goes

Mags

Great news!!! We can bring Cassie home this afternoon!!

Sam, sounds like Ted and Bug were really lucky to have you see them through their difficult start in life and it sounds like they are very close, that's so sweet. Glad to hear Ted has started to eat a bit. I was talking to the vet this morning and she said they've been tempting Cassie with pilchards or sardines in tomato sauce and she's been nibbling at that more than the chicken. Might be worth a try with Ted??
Let us know how things go.

She's home!!!!!
She's very quiet and tired and also seems very jumpy at any noise. Have tried to give her a little bit of food, she seems keen to eat but just turns away from it.
Have to give her antibiotics twice a day and appetite boosters twice a day.
She is far from being my 'old' Cassie but I'm sure we'll get there shortly.
We have to take her back to the vet on Tuesday for a check.
It's great having her back home though!

It's strange isn't it, you'd think that Ted would prefer something 'softer' than a hard biscuit when she's not well. Has she never ever tasted meat or fish?

It's lovely that Ted and her sister are close like that, they must be wonderful company for each other....and for you. I hope it won't be too long before she's better and up to mischief again.

when they were born the vets told me after a week to put them down. They had so many problems between them and the vets were saying the cost would be so high that in reality it wasnt worth it.However i had made the decision to bring them into this world and therefore was my responsability to do all i could.Despite major heart ach and tears they pulled through. At the age of 16 weeks they could both still sit in your hand ,they were so small.
Because of all the problems when she was a baby she had special diet which couldnt include fresh/tinned meat.upset their tiny tummys.so even now she wont eat meat,we have tried so many different things but she turns her nose up.Had cod for tea and she wouldnt even look at it.She likes one biscuit so will keep offering her that.Such a silly girl but a sweetie
