Sorted out my problem between Photobucket and iPhoto so here is the long promised photo of my new girls Maud and Mabel. Sussex Ponte, they are a good brown egg laying hybrid. Not laying yet but nearly there, the dark days are delaying them but Maggie May is still in full swing.

Lovely to see Maud and Mabel PP - Light Sussex is a pretty bird - what are they crossed with do you know?

Cute birds! I would love to keep chooks (could eat eggs every day), lack of space and a feather phobia preclude it though.

The Ponte is a hybrid of the Light Sussex and A Rhode Island, I believe Angie. Both a escape artists I've discovered. Had great fun this morning chasing Mabel around the garden, me in my dressing gown and crocs! Put her back inside the netting with a bit of corn and encouragement.
Sorry to hear about the feather phobia Yola, I find stroking them very therapeutic, when I can catch them that is

Thanks PP - they don't have any of the Rhodey looks though do they? Are you singing to them to encourage laying????

Er, my singing would be enough to scramble the egg inside its shell Angie   No I think I can spare them the ordeal.
I think the R.I. strain is well diluted, it's just the propensity to lay that is carried in that gene. They are much more mature now, their combs and cheek patches are bright pink and soon they will be laying eggs. They won't be as brown as Maggie's as she has maran strain in her.

"Say little hen
When, when when
Will you lay me an egg
For my tea?"
