Our beautiful Katie had just turned 10 and she took a stroke. At first the vet wasn't sure if it was an inner ear infection or a stroke or both. However she has what could be termed as similar to Bells Palsy with facial drop, head tilt and her left eye does not work. She needs daily eye drops to keep, the eye moist otherwise it might ulcerated. At this stage it is watching her closely as the vet says we can't rule out a brain tumour:cry:

If she deteriorates the vet wants to carry out a MRI Scan.

Yesterday was a bad day, she wouldn't eat and just lay in her bed not moving, we really thought we would have to have an emergency vet call out. However today although eating little, she is a little brighter.

We are still not eating much she did eat a slice of ham earlier - you get to the stage you would offer them anything. For those that dont know shes in kidney failure x

Sorry to hear your news. It's very difficult if they won't eat. Is she dehydrated, if not it may be worth asking about vitamin injections and anabolic steroids, this is a 'pick me up' for renal cats but obviously check if its ok for dogs! I'm guessing she has horner's syndrome? I've seen a couple of dogs at the vet with it after various issues and they recovered over time. Fingers crossed she feels better soon.

Poor Daisy, a stroke and renal failure.. She is such a beautiful girl.I do hope that she starts to eat soon.Keeping everything crossed for a swift recovery for her.Have you tried her with Addiction dog food?I had a very old dog that survived solely on Addiction. It smells great and of course it is hydrated with hot water which brings out the flavour even more. I don't know a dog that doesn't love it.

News is not good. Katie had bloods taken today & the kidneys are failing. :(

She got an anti nausea inj & an injection of Amoxicillin, plus oral antbiotics. All we can do is monitor her condition & treat the symptoms. She ate a little food tonight but has no interest in her renal food at all :(

What horrible news Velvet. I was hoping that Katie was getting better.I do so hope that the medication kicks in and Katie starts to eat a bit more. I know that one of my colourpoints refused to eat the renal food as well, no matter how it was presented.Have you tried hand feeding Katie? My thoughts are with you and Katie.

Our little Katie isnt improving, still no appetite, she just drinks & sleeps. Got different food from the vets today to no avail, nothing tempts her or if it does - one or two mouthfuls & she turns away. I feel as if shes slipping away in front of me. :(

sorry to hear this Helen.
I assume you have tried things like warm chicken to tempt her, i know she should be on a renal diet but sometimes any food is better than none.
I know it's not the same situation but an elderly dog of mine was very indifferent to food and i used to have to spoon feed him, he enjoyed human food and at that point anything went. He also enjoyed a cup of tea which seemed to get him going a bit.

I had her back to the vets this morning. He says he isnt convinced her problem is all renal, he thinks she may have a brain tumour :(. He gave her an appetite stimulant injection which lasts five days & then i think to think again. He says himself it doesnt look good :(

:( :( Oh honey, so sorry and this is very confusing all these diagnoses. I just hope our lovely Katie isn't in pain, but she seems not to be taking much in at the moment. At least she can sleep and that is probably best for her.

Katie eating a little better but won't touch the renal food it's a case of giving her what she wants which is chicken slightly warmed.

Helen, that's great news. I used warm chicken to feed Benji when he was poorly.

Still very up and down. What she ate on Sunday she brought up during wee small hours of Monday. Small breakfast refused fish lunch but ate chicken dinner. She appears more relaxed. Just taking each day as it comes & not lookng further

The vet thinks the Stroke or tumour has affected her sight & hearing. She goes into deep sleeps & doesnt hear when i call & this ties in with vets diagnosis. I gently rub her leg or head until she wakens. Ive noticed her looking blankly when i do exaggerated hand signals.

I now homecook for her. I buy either minced lamd (pre frozen from tesco) or minced turkey leg. Grate carrot & sweet potato & lightly cook all together. Id like her to eat (long) french beans as theyre full of vits, nutrients & fibre but she can pick them out!

She has cut herself down to one small meal a day but at least shes eating something.

This is Katie with Jac xx

Katie:
Katie ate twice today (Friday) & asked both times for food. Still cooking for her. I don't expect she will ever go back onto any kind of renal diet now or indeed any kind of dog food.

We have settled on minced turkey, chicken or lamb cooked with grated carrot & grated sweet potato.

Minced beef caused some foamy acid reaction so it wont be repeated. Red meat can be hard to digest.

A batch lasts a couple of days.

One of these days i will find a way to get long (french green beans) into her or maybe not

Things are very bad. I had Katie to the vets yesterday. Last night i had to contact the emergency vet. Shes in today for urgent xrays & endoscope.

She was up all night constantly vomiting & all i could do was mop it up & hold her. I stayed up with her, it was the least i could for her. She was so weak i had to lift her in & out of the car this morning.

I had been feeding her a homemade diet which had brought her creatin levels down (her renal disease) so the vet feels this is something entirely different.

Im really upset, shes such a good little dog, her whole life, you could never say she was naughty & she so doesnt deserve this.

We lost Katie yesterday. In the end it wasn't her renal disease, that took her, she had Stomach Cancer.

I cannot begin to describe how i feel, the utter sense of loss & devastation. The pain of losing her is unbearable. The knowledge she had cancer is so hard.

She was the sweetest kindest dog there ever was.

A vet once said to me - if you were going out looking for the perfect dog, you would look no further than Katie.
