We had definitely closed our doors to any more cats, quite a few are struggling- Fluffy is losing weight and is anaemic and Pudding ended up on a drip 2 weeks ago, being very off colour and dehydrated. They have both picked up but it's only a matter of time.
However, on Thursday we took in some very new arrivals. Someone we know was working on a farm, jet washing a slurry tank, when he noticed 2 kittens in the run off, presumably to nest was near by and disturbed. He had no idea what to do as they were young, wet and covered in slurry- so he took them to us. They saw a vet and they were only about a week old, eyes still closed. The ginger ( boy!) now called Rufus has a badly broken foreleg and the tabby ( girl?) called Penny, had a head wound and a nasty one on her bottom making her incontinent. The vet has stitched up the wound and she appears to be much better, but over the last few days she has developed a tremor, which the vet thinks is neurological. It's now a case of wait and see how Rufus's leg heals and how the tremor affects Penny.

Rufus.

Farthing, I marvel at the work you guys do. Thank you for opening your doors to these two. I suspect without your help their time would be short. I hope they are both able to pull through and live long and happy lives.

A wee update on the Halfpenny kittens, they are about 6 weeks old now!
Rufus's leg has completely healed and his is not lame.
Penny still has a head tremor but only when worried or excited. We think she may have issues with judging distance, possibly eyesight problems.
They are both pretty much weaned and have been moved into a dog crate in our bedroom so they meet the other cats safely.

Rufus, in the front.

We've also agreed, against our better judgement to take in a 16 year old cat!

Such good news - I'm so happy that Penny and Rufus are making excellent progress. What of the 16 y/o cat? How did you come by him/her?

The owners of the 16 year old cat are in rented accommodation, but have to be out by the 22nd if July. They are in the process of converting a steading, and do not know if they are going to end up in a caravan or other accommodation. The cats protection told them to contact us. They are happy to pay £10 a month towards her keep and may take her back when the house is organised.
We have our old foster cat, Pod, coming for his holidays while his owners are away ( Pod has behavioural issues), so when he goes home, the cat will come in, to initially live inn the study until she is a bit more settled. For a change, she is at least fully vaccinated, vet checked and wormed!

They sound nice caring folk and hopefully will take their cat back when they get settled.

I agree. That's responsible pet ownership, rather than doing what a lot of folk would; turfing poor puss out on the street.

The kittens are now ready for their first vaccinations, they are little thugs. Rufus is a typical ginger boy, very affectionate, whereas Penny is hyperactive.

A quick update on Fluffy and Pudding.
They are both being fed separately 4 times a day, and Fluffy has put on a tiny amount of weight, but at least she has stopped losing it. She has developed a little cough when lying, the vet can't hear any fluid in her lungs, but she is in heart failure so I wanted her checked.
Pudding is now on metacam, I've tried to avoid it because of her kidney issues, but the acupuncture was not working for the arthritis in her jaw. She gets puréed pâté food with ipakitine powder added and has put on half a kilo!
Her breathing has been laboured the last few days, the vet couldn't find anything wrong, but gave her a long acting antibiotic. It may be the heat but we covered for and infection anyway.

So, although the old ladies are basically getting palliative care and being kept as comfortable as we can, they are actually doing ok.:D

Well, it's hard to get pictures of them, because they never sit still, but a couple of OK ones!

We pick up Calvin the 16 year old cat at 5 today. Hopefully she will settle in and be happy. I think I'm going to struggle with a girl called Calvin though, so she may well become Cally.

I hope Cally settles in well with your pride, farthing. (Calvin is a wee bit of an odd name for a girlie!)
