Species Appropriate Food?

Sometime ago, when I had a cat who was so obsessed with grooming that she would take her own skin off, my vet suggested not to feed her fish as she may be allergic. The reason she suggested I don't feed fish was because cats, as a species, wouldn't naturally eat fish in the wild.

With my current cat I was thinking of feeding dry Meowing Heads Salmon variety with Feline Fayre wet which consists of 60% fish. This initially seemed to be a good choice, but then it occurred to me I would be giving Visa pretty much only one protein source in her diet. I've since decided to stick with Feline Fayre wet and go for Meowing Heads Chicken variety. Then it occurred to me, chicken wouldn't exactly be a species appropriate food either. So unless they invent a Sparrow and Shrew food I'm pretty much screwed! :lol:

What does everyone else feed and are you as OCD about it as I appear to be??? :lol:

I feed what suits Tim our eldest, he has a sensitive digestion.

The adults get Hills Sensitive dry kibble bowls of it are free fed. In mornings they get their wet food - Felix sensations range, you can get a box of mixed meat, fish and poultry and that suits them grand. They were on Natures Menu however last year in the snow and ice had to take what local shop sold & never could get them back onto anything else :)

The kittens get sachet each of Natures Menu kitten in morning and Hills kitten dry kibble is down for free feeding throughout the day. They did get Proplan kitten however discovered to my dismay last bag I bought they not only changed their packaging but also the kitten food recipe. Hills guarantee never to change recipes so hence our change to Hills kitten food. :-D

Occasionally, not all the time, they get a saucer of cat's milk left down. Tim never touches it but the girls like it :)

Hez - your post did make me smile! I've often wondered why manufacturers don't make "mouse" or "dead bird" variety ....... I suspect it's to do with the fact that the customers are humans!

You could explore feeding a raw diet - although it's not something I have any experience of, I know some members here do. Hope someone comes along soon to advise.

Tbh my lot get whatever is on offer at the time! Compared to when Teddie was a kitten and I bought so many different types of 'specialist' foods that made not a jot of difference. The only ones they have ignored were morrisons own brand, everything else the scoff :D

Beef/lamb tend to make Abi sick sometimes, so we're sticking with chicken from now on (for the wet food).
Switched the wet to Butchers as it has a MUCH higher meat content than Whiskas!

Whiskas gives Tim the most awful flatuence and diarrhoea as did the Royal Canin dry food he was on before we got him:shock:

I tried her on a bit of raw (my dogs are raw fed) but it was a big fat no! :lol:

As it turns out she doesn't like Feline Fayre, so I'm trying her on Hi Life Essentials which are going down a storm. :roll:

My last cat just got bog standard Whiskas and seemed to do ok, I suppose I'd feel guilty feeding her bog standard stuff now cos my dogs get super high quality food! :lol:
