Our main litter boxers (covered) are kept out in the kitchen & utility room so the cats have access 24 x7. When Mindy had her op w had to leave an open tray out as her e collar wouldn't go through the covered litter tray door plus we kept a open tray in the living room for her
Open trays as we all know are messy. When Misty comes this coming week :-D we will of course have to go back to some open trays & the additional one in the living room. It does not matter so much about the other ones however has anyone any ideas what we can put under and around the open tray in the living room to stop the litter going everywhere? Just because we have it down for the kitten does not mean that the others won't use it and Timmy sends litter flying everywhere.

We have had the mats you can buy in the pet stores but never found them all that good in the sense that they don't do much to helpmcontain the litter. Wee Mindy was so good - from no age she was clambering into the big litter trays after seeing the bigger cats do it

So anyone any ideas folks?

Hi when I am looking after kittens I often just take the door off a closed litter tray and put it on some clear plastic floor covering but another way ive tried is a open tray placed in a open cardboard box with low sides ( like the ones fruit is packed in at supermarket) I then cut a lower side at one end (a door)to allow access for kittens .
If you use this idea its a good idea to put some layers of newspaper in the cardboard box first incase any gos over the sides of tray

That sounds like a good place to start Velvet - when I put down an open tray (if the weather gets bad) in the utility room I have a mat by the doorway that certainly seems to help stop tracking around the house. The cats don't seem to read the "Please Wipe Your Feet" sign though :D :D :D

I've always had open trays, none of mine have ever been enthusiastic litter-throwers. I have a mat, sort of like a bath mat, in front of my tray and it's good at catching any litter that Leia's tracking out. Got it at Petsmart.

I have an open tray in our bathroom and they dont generally throw it about but they do bring it out of the tray attached to their paws which comes out of their pads when they walk about. Got a covered tray in the hall walk in cupboard but still got the same prob with the litter in their paws
