In yesterday's Daily, I was complaining that toasters weren't made to last the way they used to be, and that my relatively new one was acting up. Well, went to use it today and ...........

it is completely dead!

Moral: don't insult your appliance on a public forum, you'll be sorrrrrry !

Uh-oh, those machines are listening!

Here's hoping it's just something simple like a fuse.

It is funny, MrsH. I was just ranting a bit, and then ....... dead toaster. It was an inexpensive one, so just back to Amazon and order a new one....

Oh how annoying! When you haven't got one you really want to use one

*hugs* What a pest Eileen... But you do indeed get what you pay for... When I moved here I bought the cheapest of the cheap that way (talking £2-3 or so from ASDA/Walmart). Thus far it's coping, but I've only been here a few years now... Least, as and when it needs replaced, I won't need to replace everything at once, but...

I hated my toaster! It wasn't too expensive, but not cheap either, would always burn one side of the toast! So when I moved I bought a gas cooker with an eye level grill, perfect toast every time :-D I couldnt go back to using a toaster again!

I'm using my toaster oven for toast until the new one comes; I hate heating up the large appliance for just a slice of toast!.

I have 2 chrome Russell Hobbs bought from a boot-sale 15 years ago for £1.50 each, one as a spare. Trouble is I haven't had the need for the spare yet so gave it to a friend whose 2 year old cheap toaster broke down recently. My kettle's also RH, used on a daily basis and reeeallly old!

Thank goodness for toaster ovens Eileen! We call them grill elements over here..?

Is this what you call a grill element, Truth? This is what mine looks like; couldn't be without one. Ideal for a single person who likes to cook, no need to heat up a big oven!

Eileen... I *think* what is being talked about is the bit up the top of this cooker...

It's just a grill, which you can slip your toast in to heat up. Again, no need to heat up the whole cooker for it...

Interesting, thanks! I've never seen one like that ......

I've only known one or two people with ovens like that... One of whom was a child minder, so I have some vague memories of toast being made on it.

You also get them with two compartments below the hob, and the upper one of those is often a separate grill...

I got it wrong dandysmom, I meant just the bit that toasts the bread is called a grill or rather a heating element. Sorry to sound confusing there.

Looks like you've got yourself a mini oven with a single heating element at the top which doubles up as a grill?
Handy little piece of equipment!

They are mini-ovens, bake, broil; I couldn't be without one. I got my first back in the late 50s; think I'm on the third now; they're pretty sturdy. They're very common here.
